Piazza San Marco

Saint Mark’s Square

Well… you know it, of course… St. Mark’s Square…. la Piazza di San Marco. This is, after all, the square to which virtually all Venice tourists make their pilgrimage. Often crowded during the day and thus deprived of a good part of its atmosphere. Of course, we Venetians also love this square. But we know better than to visit it at rush hour!

In fact, if you visit San Marco in the evening or very early, you can have the square almost all to yourself. The bars are open even then, not all, but some. And in the twinkling of the lights or in the light of the rising sun, the buildings unfold a magic all their own! If the weather is good, the buildings on the opposite islands, including San Giorgo Maggiore, are beautifully illuminated in the morning. It’s worth getting up early and paying extra for a hotel in Venice instead of out on the mainland!
