San Giorgio Maggiore

San Giorgio Maggiore

Almost everyone who visits Venice sees the island from the Doge’s Palace. But only a few take the vaporetto across to San Giorgio Maggiore. Yet the crossing takes only a few minutes and it is much less busy there. I like to do this when it is too crowded around St. Mark’s Square during the day. The view from there is very nice and there is also a pretty park in the back of the island.

There are only 11 people living on the island. All men. They don’t take women in the convent! The present church is from 1610, but there has been a predecessor building at this place already in 982. Alma and I occasionally take our camping chairs and have a picnic overlooking the town. Highly recommended!
