Bacino di San Marco

For some time now, the very large cruise ships are fortunately no longer allowed to pass St. Mark’s Square. And I sincerely hope that it stays that way! What many do not know: The waves caused by these giant ships damage the foundations of our houses and reduce their load-bearing capacity. You don’t even want to imagine that in detail….

When I used to watch the ocean liners pass through our city, it was of course a bit fascinating. And threatening, because the cruise ships were higher than most of our houses and when they honked loudly, it went through your spine. I don’t even want to talk about the awful music they played over the ship’s speakers as they cast off. Only so much: Our Andrea Bocelli probably wouldn’t have wanted that either!

I don’t want to put myself in the shoes of a vaporetto pilot or a cab boat driver who encountered such a barge during the passage. Now the Bacino di San Marco belongs again to the smaller boats and everyone can enjoy the view.

A few years ago Angelo made a video of a boat passing through for a protest action (of course!). Such recordings are historical by now, so I want to show you one here:
